Are the Americans on this forum using the word "fake" as a synonym for "false" when discussing Global Warming?

If so, is that some sort of American colloquialism used by children/teens? (Doesn't "fake" usually mean "counterfeit"?) I spent many years in the UK but have not encountered this sort of usage. Is this teen slang?
