Does a HCl and Magnesium reaction produce carbon dioxide? How about a HCl and sodium carbonate reaction?

For chemistry we are doing a lab and me and my partner did something wrong so now I'm stuck with questions I don't know the answers to. So, and I need to know if a hydrochloric acid and magnesium reaction produces carbon dioxide. I also need to know if a hydrochloric acid and sodium carbonate reaction produces carbon dioxide. Thanks :)
