How important is it to have kissed by the end of the 2nd date?

Had a nice 1st date with a girl, and having a 2nd date this weekend. We didn't kiss on the first date (someone suggested to me it's not a good idea to do that on a 1st date), but uming the 2nd date goes well, is it presumed that we will kiss at some point in the evening? If there is no kiss (presumably would have to be initiated by me being the guy), would that almost harm the chances of any relationship developing?
